“What is the difference between a clutch and a minaudière – aren’t they the same thing?”

This question is frequently asked by friends or shoppers who are new to the website, so I thought why not write a blog about this?

First, let us discuss the clutch. The clutch bag was inspired by the reticule, a stylish bag in which a proper lady kept her handkerchief and smelling salts during the Victorian era. Traditionally, the clutch became the evening bag of choice for elegant women all over the world after World War II. Clutches were once thought to be emblems of wealth and status, similar to the rant and rave that most luxury accessory items are today. Over time, designers began to offer clutch bags in diverse shapes, making them appropriate for daytime use as well. The clutch bag is essentially a compact, flat bag with several variations: envelope, box, handheld, flap-top, fold-over, kiss lock with or without handles, and detachable straps. The bag’s slimness and primary use as a handbag are its two most distinguishing features. Beaded or leather, boxy or soft, they offer the finishing touch to an outfit that is bold enough to stand out on its own, but would be even more so with a little something sparkly under the arm. Our customers match their outfits with clutch bags from KEXAZ Designs as our range is perfectly suited for a night out as well as smart or casual moments. We have an array of clutch style bags for you to choose from.

Let’s talk about the minaudière? A minaudière is not to be confused with the clutch. There is a clear distinction between the two. As the clutch’s close cousin, it is intended for evening galas and black tie events (although we noticed that Caroline from Sex and the City used hers during the daytime as well). With it being used since the 1930s, the minaudière has gained much popularity. Patented by Van Cleef & Arpels and sold by Cartier in New York.  It is a decorative piece that is often embellished with loads of sparkle, bling beads and jewels. The minaudière is a small, colourful or sparkling evening bag that holds jewels, cosmetics or personal items and comes in a composition of a three-dimensional shape, or traditional oval, oblong, or square shapes. They usually come embellished with beads, sequins, glitter, crystals, rhinestones, or jewels. It is a very petite handbag hence if your evening look calls for a splash of dazzling elegance then be sure to consider one of our minaudières.
